Combined Ops - 1st Edition - Signed by Anthony "Nuts" McAuliffe
Combined Operations: The Official Story of the Commandos, with a Foreword by Vice-Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten. 1st Edition Hardcover – January 1, 1943
COMBINED OPERATIONS: THE OFFICIAL STORY OF THE COMMANDOS was written in England at the height of World War II. It is the story of how not only the British navy, marines, army and air force came under a central organized command, but as the other Allied Forces joined in the war effort, how they were utilized in this structure.
Written in 1943, it was felt that this was really the only method to defeat the Hitler war machine. It was predicted at that time that ambitious amphibious warfare as well as the air war was needed as the war continued. This did indeed play out, as well noted especially in Normandy, on D-Day, June 6, 1944. The book includes illustrations, maps, as well as the detailed, very interesting text, of great interest to any student of military tactics and/or World War II.
A few of these around, but none as special as this one - formally owned and I assume read by none other than Lt Col. (as he was when this was dated) Anthony Clement "Nuts" McAuliffe (2 July 1898 – 10 August 1975) who was a senior United States Army officer who later earned fame as the acting commander of the 101st Airborne Division defending Bastogne, Belgium, during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. He is celebrated for his one-word reply to a German surrender ultimatum: "Nuts!" This is an astonishing collectable for anyone interested in Combined Ops or in 101st Airborne history, especially the events surrounding the incredible defence of Bastogne, as it ius signed and dated preceeding these events. Very, very special offering - you could say this book is the "absolute nuts"!
